Colonial Calvinist Family Sex Cult: The Dutartre Haunting
The Dutartre family cult, formed in early 1700s Charleston, followed radical Moravian missionaries and engaged in disturbing practices. Living in a secluded commune, they defied colonial laws and treated the women, including adolescent daughters, as carnal slaves. Their violent resistance against authorities led to a deadly showdown, culminating in several hangings. Today, the site where the cult lived is said to be haunted, with shadowy figures and eerie occurrences reported, making it one of Charleston’s spookiest and most haunted historical sites.
